The Essential Sixth Stage

Over the next few weeks, our Butler Street blogs will be designed to help you not only endure these unpredictable times, but to breakthrough and emerge stronger. We will share how to tap into your entrepreneurial skills, collaborate more effectively with clients, colleagues, and your suppliers, and to focus on diversity and long-term thinking.

You are likely familiar with the 5 stages of grief. It’s undeniable we’ve all experienced this to some level over the last 90 days. I’ve seen leaders, companies, and individuals go through these stages with a sole focus of getting to the acceptance stage as quickly as possible.

Truth: acceptance is not going to be enough! In fact, we are adding a 6th stage to this model:

  1. Denial

  2. Anger

  3. Bargaining

  4. Depression

  5. Acceptance

  6. Perfection

You see, when our environment is relatively stable, things are going well and challenges are simple, it is easy to be comfortable with acceptance. But enduring companies and resilient people adopt a growth mindset. A mindset that is always focused on improving; knowing that perfection is never possible but striving for it is.

Here is our mindset motto that works for both stable environments and (hello 2020) dynamic and unpredictable environments:

Don't Just Accept it - Perfect it!™

The "new normal" and the "next normal" are common phrases in today’s world. I challenge you to find your “better normal.” It will take being able to recognize where you have a fixed mindset and intentionally moving toward a growth mindset.

Right now, it’s the Tale of Two Cities when speaking with leaders. I hear comments that are coming from a fixed mindset and those that are coming from a growth mindset. It’s glaringly obvious which organizations will be celebrating success in 2021. Here are some examples of the differences: (click on right corner for slide show of each)

The list goes on an on. Did you see yourself in a fixed mindset? It’s common. In fact, that is precisely why the average life span of S & P corporations is less than 20 years and most entrepreneurial businesses don’t make it 5 years. It’s not because of pandemics; it’s because they lack acting with a growth mindset.

Dr. Wayne Dyer said it best:

"If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at will change."

Creating a better normal begins with your mindset. Getting your mind right so you can get your actions right is key to accomplishing anything. Butler Street’s Four Cornerstones of Success®  are a simple and powerful reminder of what it takes to achieving anything in life; both personally and professionally (one of the first lessons in all our trainings).  Contact us to discuss how we can help you adopt this motto and grow: Don’t Just Accept it; Perfect it!
